Popularly acknowledged as the ‘Queen’ of winter treks, Kedarkantha is the perfect trek to witness the virgin snow at its fullest. The name of the place itself serves to Lord Shiva as Kedar means Shiva and Kantha means Neck. This remarkable trek has positioned an altitude of 12,500 ft above the sea level and has a lot to offer in terms of diverse natural landscapes and scenic splendour. Fulfil your dream of trekking in the Himalayas in winters at Kedarkantha. The best time visit is from December to April with reputed trek operators like Indiahikes or Trek The Himalayas.

The not so difficult trek is located in Govind Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand. It starts from a pretty little village, Sankri which itself offers some of the amazing views of the Himalayan peaks. One must reach Dehradun first and then commence for an 8-hour journey to Sankri. The start of the trek is covered with dense forests filled with assorted flora including oaks, pines, and maple trees. The weather is habitually pleasant and the vistas are spellbinding.

After several hours of challenging yourself, you are awarded the enchanting wonder that is Juda-ka-Talab. Be welcomed by the frozen lake and a forest so dense that light hardly ever seeps through.  The picture will leave you mesmerised with its soothing and serene approach. The area is entirely in the shade of the densest forests one can ever witness. This prospect is enormously refreshing from our monotonous-busy lives.

The trail up ahead is usually covered in knee-deep snow and hiking on the snowy tracks is an experience of a lifetime.  The campsite is roofed with a sheet of snow and offer a panoramic view of the Gangotri ranges. Sleep under the blanket of a million stars but with warm and essential gear as the nights are freezing cold with the temperature down to -70C or – 80 C. The destination is visible from the base camp and the view fills you with motivation and renewed energy to reach to the top.

After trekking for 20 km total, you finally reach your awaited destination. All the exhaustion flies away in an instant. Enjoy the solitude and caressing winds along with the enthralling picturesque. Take lots of pictures from all possible angles, do a classic pose like the superman pose, titanic pose or the on top of the world pose! Build a snowman!! And don’t forget to take it all in before you leave.

Walking down is much easier and fun. You can walk, run or even slide down. The memories and satisfaction you will take back from Kedarkantha are inexplicable.
